With a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP you can claim a rebate for up to ten sessions a calendar year with a registered or clinical psychologist, mental health social worker or occupational therapist: $101.55 a session for a registered psychologist and $149.05 for a clinical psychologist from 1 July 2026. Counsellors and coaches are not Medicare-eligible. Psychiatrist consultations attract their own rebates.
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?
Yes. To claim the Medicare rebate you need a current referral from your GP. Many psychiatrists in the directory offer telehealth, which widens your choice beyond your suburb.
