Can I use Medicare?
With a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP you can claim a rebate for up to ten sessions a calendar year with a registered or clinical psychologist, mental health social worker or occupational therapist: $101.55 a session for a registered psychologist and $149.05 for a clinical psychologist from 1 July 2026. Counsellors and coaches are not Medicare-eligible. Psychiatrist consultations attract their own rebates.
Who can diagnose ADHD in Canberra?
In Australia a psychiatrist, a paediatrician (for children) or, in a growing number of states, a specially trained GP can diagnose ADHD and initiate treatment. Psychologists can assess and support ADHD but cannot prescribe. Ask a practitioner how they work with a GP or psychiatrist if medication is part of your plan.
